M42 is the designation for the Great Orion Nebula. The nebula is one of the largest and brightest and can be seen without aid as a hazy glow around the multiple star in the center of Orion's belt. M42 is a known area of active star formation. To the north is the Running Man Nebula formed by NGC 1973/75/77.
