| The Great Andromeda Galaxy, designated as Messier object M31, is a sister galaxy to the Milky Way. Slightly larger and with accompanying elliptical galaxies M32 (just above) and NGC 205 (below), the Andromeda Galaxy lies 2.2 million light years away and is one of the most distant 'naked-eye' objects in the northern sky.
